“I am Hiroshi Wakamatsu, a professional dancer, choreographer, actor and filmmaker. I began my career as a ballet dancer in 1994 in Tokyo, Japan, and since then I have worked with several renowned dance companies around the world (e.g. Berlin Ballett Komische Oper, Stadttheater Gießen in Germany). In 2008, I founded my own company, COMPAGNIE HIROSHI WAKAMATSU, with which I have given several performances in different cities and countries. Besides my work in dance, I also have experience as an actor in theatre, film and television. As a teacher, I regularly teach classical and contemporary dance classes at different levels, from beginners to professionals, in various dance schools and companies around the world. Outside my professional career, my hobbies are music, film and travelling.”
I have been working as a freelancer for almost 20 years. I chose this path for several reasons. First, freelancing gives me an artistic and creative freedom that I don’t always find in the more traditional structures of dance companies. It allows me to explore different forms of artistic expression and work on a variety of projects that inspire me. Moreover, being a freelancer allows me to manage my own schedule and choose the projects I want to work on, which gives me more flexibility to combine my career with my personal life. Finally, freelancing also allows me to collaborate with different artists and professionals from all over the world, which enriches my experience and allows me to constantly learn new things.”
